Teachers for Social Justice, Project NIA, and The Chicago Freedom School have recently put out a comprehensive anti-violence curriculum. The downloadable program is an excellent resource for an in-depth exploration of all types of violence. ICHV’s program is different in that, while all types of violence need to be addressed on all levels, we have chosen to focus specifically on handgun violence. With much work needed in the area of gun laws and constant lobbying from the NRA, handgun violence through both accidents and intentional motives remains as the most dangerous threat to our communities. The impersonal, sudden nature of handgun violence is of particular concern and student voices are especially necessary in order to help work toward change. As leaders of the future, it is up to students to take an active role in passing gun legislation that will lead to safer communities as well as changing perceptions that associate guns with positive images.
