Skills and Content Connections
Understanding that teachers often find themselves having to choose between covering required content and skills and addressing crucial issues in the lives of their students, this curriculum attempts to be the best of both worlds. While allowing students to explore and have voice on the important and relevant topic of gun violence, the lessons in this program also cover the following:
.
- Important, content-specific terms and vocabulary
- PSAE and ACT skills
- Illinois State Learning Standards and Benchmarks
- Suggestions for extension activities and content connections based on typical school curriculum models
- A wide variety of resources accessible on our website to supplement the curriculum
.
Cross-Curricular Connections
A lot of anti-violence programming focuses on integration of the Language Arts and Social Science disciplines, or even on character education programs, which a lot of schools have recently adopted. This curriculum, however, also includes extension activities and lessons for use in the science, math, and technology classrooms using statistic analysis, graphing and charting, graphic design projects, etc. See the lessons on pages 8 and 9 for specific examples of lessons in various content areas.
